In 2019 Frenkie De Jong left Erik Ten Haag’s Ajax to join Barcelona. The midfielder has been a key player for the Spanish giants putting in some sensational displays. However, with Barcelona in crippling debt, the club is struggling to register new signings such as Kessie and Christensen and is currently unable to do the transfer business they want with ESPN reporting that there is still £1 billion debt looming over the Camp Nou. With Barcelona refusing to sign the CVC agreement that would help them with their debt issues it seems that they will have to sell to buy this summer with De Jong reportedly being a player they will reluctantly sell if an appropriate figure is offered, with Xavi saying “He is a fundamental player but then there is the financial situation”.
Despite Barcelona being happy to sell, the player himself doesn’t seem in a rush to leave the club as he told ESPN “I prefer to stay with Barcelona, Barcelona is just my dream club”. These comments however did not scare off interest with Manchester United being heavily interested and have been in contact with the Dutch international since June 1st. Erik Ten Haag is determined to reunite with De Jong and sees him as the perfect signing to begin his rebuild at Old Trafford.. The red devils have made a bid of €60m plus €10m add-ons according to Fabrizio Romano but Barcelona has turned down this opening bid but would accept an offer of around €85m. De Jong has always preferred a move to a Champions League club however reports from Sami Mokbel suggest that the player is warming to a move to Manchester United and the lure of a reunion with Ten Haag is described as a major factor in De Jong’s willingness to become a United player this summer. Other clubs are interested with Bayern Munich being the next most serious candidate. More to come in this transfer saga but there's no doubt that in the end someone will be getting a player of great quality.
